East Deck 1 Changes to Expect This Fall

Date Published:
August 7, 2012

East Deck 1 has undergone an upgrade this summer. Entrances and exits have been reconfigured for efficiency, lighting has been improved, and the deck will no longer need an attendant.

By August 20, the entire deck will operate as a combined Faculty/Staff and Visitor area. All vehicles will access the deck using the entrance that was before reserved for visitors. Anyone entering the deck may park on any level they choose.

How it works for Faculty/Staff

Faculty/staff members who have paid for F/S gated access will have two options for entry and exit. Entry and exit gates are automatically lifted by the parking permit’s RFID chip.  (RFID is activated on permits belonging to those who have requested and paid for F/S gated access.)

  • Entry
    • Level 1, off of Mary Alexander Rd, previously the Visitor entrance
    • Level 2, through East Deck 2, accessed from Van Landingham Rd. or Rt. 49 South
  • Exit
    • Level 1, towards Mary Alexander, will have two exit lanes. One dedicated to Faculty/Staff only, the other for Faculty/Staff and visitors combined
    • Level 2, leads in to East Deck 2, which can then access Van Landingham Rd. or Rt. 49 South

How it works for Visitors

A “pay-on-foot” station will allow visitors to pay their fee and retrieve a validated ticket. To exit, visitors will put the validated ticket into an exit verifier to open the gate.

A visitor may access only one entrance on Level 1 (same entrance they have always used).  When a visitor enters, the system will release a timed ticket for them to take. Visitors can either pay for their own parking as they leave or a department can supply them with validated parking. The new pay-on-foot fee stations do not accept tokens.

  • Visitors paying for their own parking
    • Payment made at the pay station when returning to their vehicle. Pay station will accept cash coin and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express)
    • The pay station will credit their ticket and give them 10 minutes to return to their vehicle and proceed to the exit lane.
    • When in the exit lane, they will insert their ticket in to the “exit verifier” and the gate will rise.
  • Department is paying for the visitor’s parking
    • Department gives the visitor a validated ticket
    • Visitor does not need to go to the Pay Station; they may proceed directly to their vehicle and place the ticket in the “exit verifier”

The number of visitors will be controlled by counting equipment. This control will enable Parking and Transportation Services to leave adequate parking for Faculty and Staff entering the deck.
