Nancy Smith, Parking and Transportation Services Field Operation Manager, reports that parking areas that consistently hit top capacity (listed in order):

  • Union Deck
  • Lot 18 (in front of the Union)
  • Lot 19 (by Spruce Hall)
  • East Deck 2 and 3
  • West Deck

“Monday through Thursday, from about 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM is when we’re seeing the most demand,” Smith says, “with Thursday being the highest.”

Based on the University’s scheduling of classes, this is to be expected. But just because it’s expected doesn’t make it any less annoying to know that odds are against getting a parking space close to campus core at 11:00 AM on any day but Friday.

Smith advises, “If you need an immediate place to park, go straight to Lot 6 [across from Campus Edge] and take the Red Line shuttle into class. Even during peak class times, there have been at least 500 spaces available in Lot 6.”

The new North Deck, located across from Laurel Hall, near Police and Public Safety, has consistently had 1,000 empty spaces since the first day of class. The Green Line shuttle picks up there and can take you straight up Craver Road to the Student Union/CHHS/COE quad, up the hill to Burson, Cameron and McEniry.

Here’s a recent local news story about parking at UNC Charlotte confirming that while prime, convenient parking is at a premium, campus does have adequate spaces.

There’s no getting around the fact that UNC Charlotte has grown so much that close-in parking is very limited from late morning until early afternoon. So if you don’t have time to try your luck, choose alternative parking that is farther out and along a shuttle route. You may be surprised by how much easier it is to just park, ride, and get on with your day. Shuttle stop maps and schedules.

With classes back in session, we wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of some of the basic etiquette for the campus shuttle that runs all over UNC Charlotte’s campus.

  • Please wait until exiting passengers have stepped off the bus before boarding.
  • Campus shuttle benches are small-ish but the forward-facing seats are meant to hold two people. During peak ridership times, go ahead and slide toward the window so someone can sit on the aisle-side without having to ask.
  • Place backpacks on your lap or on the floor, taking care not create tripping hazards near the aisle.
  • When capacity reaches standing room, move toward the back of the bus so there’s room for others to get on.
  • Simple courtesies and an occasional “excuse me,” and “thank you,” go a long way to making the ride more pleasant for everyone.

There’s no need to feel uncomfortable trekking around campus after nightfall when SafeRide evening escort is there to provide a transportation alternative to walking alone. SafeRide is there for your safety. Call it whenever you need it. Just allow time for your ride to get there; the service gets busy at times. And please, remember that SafeRide is provided for reasons greater than convenience; it also assists students and staff members with physical limitations.

Don’t forget to cancel

If you call for service and get another ride or change your mind, please call dispatch back and cancel the request. Lately, SafeRide drivers have been delayed in picking up waiting riders due to dispatch calls where no one is actually there for the pick-up. This occurs for a lot of reasons: maybe the caller got another ride, or saw a Shuttle come by, or didn’t recognize the SafeRide vehicle.

Regardless of why it happens, the result is that other people end up waiting alone unnecessarily while SafeRide drivers are looking for those who called but didn’t stay put and didn’t cancel the ride. That creates unnecessarily long wait times and a potentially unsafe situation.

SafeRide logoWhile waiting for SafeRide transport, please stay where you told the dispatcher you’d be and watch for the SafeRide vehicle. There are several different kinds of vehicles. You could be picked up by a large van, regular-sized van, small electric van or an electric cart. What distinguishes them is a SafeRide logo on the side.

The Campus Shuttle is the fastest way to get around

The fastest way to move around campus is the Campus Shuttle. Shuttles run Monday – Thursday until 10:00 PM and Friday until 6:00 PM. With multiple stops around campus and cross-campus, the shuttle provides safe, reliable transportation around residence halls and dining halls, main academic areas and the Student Union. You’ll save yourself a lot of steps by downloading shuttle schedules and becoming familiar with them.

Use SafeRide when the Shuttle isn’t running

SafeRide is best utilized when the shuttle isn’t running. If you find yourself in a situation where you’d be walking by yourself or heading to a parking lot or deck on the margins of campus late at night, don’t go it alone. Add the SafeRide number, 704‑687‑5636, to your phone contacts so you can call whenever you need it.

Campus is filled with activity as students and their stuff start filling the resident halls. And come Monday morning, the roads, lots and decks on campus will fill with cars. Some will be driven by people who know where they’re going; others… well… not so much.

Here’s what you can expect Monday (and the first week or two of Fall Semester)

  • Anyone who has any business to attend to on campus will be here, along with everyone who has class. Expect a lot of traffic and plan on exercising somepatience.
  • If you don’t have your parking permit by Monday, you will be turned away from Main decks and lots and directed to where you can legally park until your permit is purchased.
  • Based on class schedules, Mondays will be highest use days, with more cars entering campus earlier. Parking decks closest to campus core may be completely filled by 9:30 AM.
  • On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, demand will be at peak from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

Parking during Peak Times

  • The new North Deck is now open (across from Witherspoon Hall, next to Police and Public Safety) offering plenty of parking and a shuttle stop right outside.
  • Instead of circling around crowded parking decks, park in a perimeter lot and ride the shuttle to class.
  • Most parking in CRI campus is closed due to construction. Park somewhere along where the Red Line stops and take it to CRI.

Parking close does not necessarily save time

  • Average time to find space in East Deck during peak use periods: 35 minutes. Shuttle from Lot 6 to campus center: 20 minutes (based on maximum bus run-time wait).  Walk from Lot 6 to campus center: 10 minutes.
  • Average time to find space in West Deck: 45 minutes. Shuttle from Lot 8 to campus center: 20 minutes (based on maximum bus run-time wait).  Walk from Lot 8 to campus center: 15 minutes.
  • Average time to find space in Union Deck: 35 minutes. Shuttle from North Deck to campus center: 20 minutes (based on maximum bus run-time wait).  Walk from Lot 25 to campus center: 10 minutes.
