Parking and Transportation Changes to Expect this Fall

Date Published:
June 1, 2012

1. New South Village construction projects have eliminated much of the parking around the highrise residence halls

Lots 8 (between Scott and Holshouser), 8A (between Moore and Scott) and MSU (between Sanford and Moore) will have special permits, and only upperclassmen assigned to highrise residence halls are eligible to purchase them until August 1. Upperclassmen assigned to Sanford, Moore, Scott and Holshouser are strongly encouraged to purchase their permits before August 1 while they have seniority preference. After August 1, any remaining permits for these zones will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone assigned to a highrise hall, regardless of class year status.

These (and all other permit types) are available now for online purchase. (2012 Parking Permit info)

Because parking around the highrises will be so limited, expect attentive enforcement.

2. Freshmen assigned to the highrises will have to park in North Deck

This should last for a year, until the new South Village Deck is completed. (South Village construction parking impact)

3. Shuttle Rt. 47 Yellow Line to offer extended hours weekdays from 10:00 pm until 2:00 am and weekends from 8:00 am until 2:00 am

This is primarily to accommodate freshmen in the highrises who must park in North Deck, but anyone on campus may ride. Run time during those hours is expected to be every 20-30 minutes.

4. Permit price up from last year

If you've not heard this already, be prepared that the price of a full-time permit increased by $35 to $415 for academic year 2012-13 (Article about 2012-13 permit rates). Discount parking options for remote parking at Starlight Cinema, Lot 27 and Lot 6A will continue through 2012-13.

5. All permits are hangtags

No more window stickers! All parking permits are now hangtags to be displayed from the rear view mirror or on the driver’s side dash in a PaTS-approved clear pouch. (Dash pouches are available from the PaTS office; cost is $1 for two pouches). Permit hangtags have a Radio Frequency ID (RFID) chip that will open gated areas appropriate for your permit type. You may register more than one vehicle to a permit for an additional $15 fee.

6. SafeRide changes

Beginning Friday August 17,  SafeRide evening safety transport shifts from individually requested rides to point-to-point service at designated spots along a set route. This will eliminate long wait times and provide a reliable schedule. Expect enhancements like GPS location tracking with smartphone app. (Parking Map with SafeRide evening safety transport stops indicated)

Daytime disability transport will no longer be on-demand. Services must be prearranged through Disability Services. (SafeRide scheduled service  Disability Medical Verification Request)

7. Parking at CRI will be limited until the new CRI Deck opens mid-September

With CRI deck’s completion, over 1,300 spaces will be added and CRI parking will be more than adequate. (Thanks to Facilities Management for the photo. It sure is going to be a nice-looking parking deck!)
